about

Commissioned by Music Network in April 2020 to write a new traditional Irish composition for the viola, I wrote this viola trio called "Waiting for the Numbers".

This composition was inspired by the fear and anxiety that I felt during the early stage of the Covid-19 pandemic unfolding in Ireland, particularly when Chief Medical Officer for the Irish Department of Health Tony Holohan would give the daily coronavirus updates every evening.

The col legno (with the wood of the bow) playing on the viola at the start represents the ticking of a clock, the relentlessness of it's forward movement. The tune is first introduced in isolation, then develops and towards the end the melody begins to break down into shorter phrases before finishing, representing the beginning of the end of the lockdown that we have all been a part of.
